If you are suffering from severe tension headaches, your doctor may prescribe a drug called Fioricet. It contains a combination of ingredients, including acetaminophen, butalbital, and caffeine. The former is used to relieve pain and reduce fever. Belonging to the drug class called barbiturates, the butalbital in Fioricet works by relaxing the contractions of the muscles that are the cause of painful tension headaches. Finally, blood flow is improved, muscle contractions in the blood vessels are relaxed and the central nervous system is stimulated by the caffeine.
